THE INFLUENCE OF THE COLONIAL PERIOD ON THE STATE OF CONTEMPORARY AGRICULTURE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

The paper discusses the key factor that contributed to the failure of modern agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) - the colonial regime. The consequences of the colonial period for SSA countries remain in the focus of attention of scholars, who are trying to assess their impact. The main negative consequences for the development of agriculture include the problem of determining the ownership of land, a forced change in the structure of sown areas (the prevailing cultivation of cash crops beneficial to the colonizers), and a skew in the structure of exports towards single products.
