Inflammatory bowel diseases include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. They form a group of chronic gastrointestinal diseases of unclear etiology. The etiopathogenesis of these diseases is multifactorial. It is believed that the development of inflammatory bowel diseases is influenced by complex interactions of genetic, bacterial, environmental factors and disorders of the immune mechanisms of the intestine. Cytokines play an important role in inflammatory processes as signaling molecules of cells that control inflammation and the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis, performing various functions such as the production of inflammatory mediators and activation of inflammatory pathways. As a result, cytokines are directly responsible for epithelial damage, intestinal barrier defect, and tissue damage.
