The article is concerned with the legal aspects of the cryptocurrency usage. It is noted that nowadays there is not any definite interpretation of cryptocurrency and generally accepted control methods. In the article the world experience of virtual currency legal regulation is analyzed on the example of Germany, the USA and Russia. Germany was the first country in the world, that define the legal status of cryptocurrency and legalize its use in "multilateral clearing circles." In the US legal approach to virtual currency is based on its recognition as a commodity, subject to supervision by the State and, in some states, to licensing. The Russian authorities have not yet come to a unified position on this issue: there is a trend towards both a total ban of cryptocurrency use and its legalization. To conclude, government regulators should develop the common basis of cryptocurrency legal regulation in order to create favorable conditions for its further development without the threat to national security.

Keywords:cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, virtual currency, mining, economic security, nation security.
