The article is devoted to topical issues of sustainable development and ensure balanced solutions of socio-economic tasks and preservation of the environment to ensure ecological and economic security and meet the needs of present and future generations. The authors analyze the situation in education, stockpiling, treatment, processing and disposal of solid waste. The authors define the main trends of development of the sphere of solid waste management in developed countries. They also explore innovation in sustainable waste management and consider their application in Russia.
