There has been a heightened interest in Iran and Russian – Iranian relations in scientific literature and media recently. However, a comparative analysis of the development of Russian and Iranian economies is so far lacking. It is the sequence of the established opinion that Russia and Iran are too different countries. The aim of the article is to dispel the view, since socio-economic development of the two countries has much in common. The author focuses on the development of financial policy and anti-crisis measures of the Iranian government in recent years, comparing them to the general course of Russia’s economic policy. The article shows that Iran has largely gone away from the model of “theocratic capitalism”, but still tries to follow the strategy of statism in economy. An important aspect of this work is the consideration of the reaction of Iranian economy to international sanctions. The author concludes that the policy of import substitution which has been pursued by Iran for several decades is not as inefficient as one is accustomed to think in the West.
