On September 14, 2018, the Government of the Russian Federation approved the “Strategy for the Development of the Forest Complex of the Russian Federation until 2030” (hereinafter “Strategy-2030”) - the main planning document that should determine the vector of development of the Russian forest sector for many years to come. Until that moment, the Strategy for the Development of the Forest Complex of the Russian Federation for the Period up to 2020 (hereinafter referred to as the Strategy 2020) officially worked out on the eve of the financial crisis of 2008-2010, when high growth rates were inherent in all sectors of the economy, including the forest sector. and which were prolonged for the future without taking into account the uncertainties and risks that accompany economic development in the context of its globalization. Without approval of the “Strategy-2020” by the Government of the Russian Federation, it was not claimed as a strategic plan for the development of the forest sector. In this article, the author attempts to analyze whether the new strategy will become another plan on paper or it will be a really working long-term forest planning document.
