In the conditions of liberalization of legislation, strengthening of democratic processes in society, the authors propose to change the approach to the essence and purpose of state control and supervisory activities, which should be aimed at ensuring the security and protection of a person, society, state, without undue pressure on business. In the article, the authors substantiate the legislative consolidation of four types of control and supervisory activities, the most important of which should be self-control. In conclusion, the author's definition of "self-control" is given.
