The article examines the problems of structural modernization of the Russian economy in conjunction with the use of the potential of the fuel and energy complex. The regularities of structural modernization are revealed and the role of the fuel and energy complex, which is the most important structural component of the development of the country's productive forces, is determined. Formation of a trajectory of sustainable economic growth requires maximum efficiency in the use of fuel and energy resources and the potential of the energy sector. It has been substantiated that the low technical and technological level of the extractive and processing industries of the fuel and energy complex, imbalances in pricing, devaluation of the ruble do not meet the strategic goals of industrial development and the achievement of economic security.
