The legal status of artificial intelligence systems and the problem of determining responsibility for their actions under the law of the European Union

Nowadays we are facing a widespread use and application of new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). The use of such emerging systems offers great opportunities for humans. Nevertheless, there are also critical problems and difficulties that are arising. AI systems have specific capabilities, which, with the further technological development will only get more complex. AI is able to act autonomously and even to make independent and autonomous decisions. These features of AI technologies raise up complex and debatable question of the legal status of AI systems and the problem of responsibility for its actions. The European Union is actively developing the regulatory framework for AI technologies offering advanced and innovative approach. Therefore, analysis of the possible legal personality of AI systems and the issue of determining responsibility for its actions under the EU’s regulation seems to be especially interesting. The article examines the question of recognition/ non-recognition of AI’s legal personality and its limits in the EU. The article also examines the EU’s approach to the issue of responsibility for harm caused by AI ​​systems and points out its main features.
