The role of biotechnologies in the global economy of the XXI century and the prospects for their development in the Russian biotechnological sphere

The article examines the modern biotechnological sector and its main directions, determines the impact of biotechnologies on various sectors of the economy, identifies global trends in the development of biotechnologies, and analyzes the current state of the Russian biotechnology sector. The authors reveal that biotechnologies are of great importance in the global economy of the XXI century and influence the development of many economic areas, especially in the fields of pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Russia, having so far, a low share in the global production of biotechnologies, however, already has competitive advantages in certain areas, which indicates prospects for the development of the national biotechnological sphere.
