The article discusses the concept of sustainable development, lists the principles without which it is impossible to achieve sustainable development, namely the innovative principle of production, which guarantees the introduction and use of the most advanced technologies and rational and careful attitude to resource potential. The problem of uneven development of the regional economy is considered, the reasons for its occurrence and the factors influencing it are explained. A number of features are listed that must be taken into account when analyzing the economic systems of Russian regions, for example, the federal aspect and the geographical factor. The concept of imbalance is described, the importance of observing the principles of balance and self-consistency is shown. Transfer payments are considered as the most popular way to level the economic imbalance, the division of regions into donor and subsidized ones is explained, the negative consequences of such a division are listed. The sustainable development index is described as the most important indicator in the analysis of the economic development of the region. Two approaches to creating a system of such indexes are highlighted: vector and integral. The grouping of indicators that allow to reflect the real proportions and correspond to the significance of factors in the analysis of the economic system of the region is made.
