The purpose of the study is to assess the potential for reducing mortality in the Russian regions. The article substantiates that the potential for reducing mortality is any possible decrease in its intensity in terms of sex and age, reflected, among others, using the indicator of life expectancy at birth. It is shown that the negative dynamics of life expectancy in Russia affected all Russian regions without exception and became possible due to the high level of excess mortality. It is substantiated that the main attention in the process of forming the potential to reduce mortality should be given to people of middle and older ages, as well as to people of working age (where the mortality rate of men significantly exceeds the pan-European indicators), because. they are the next real cohort that needs help creating the conditions for healthy aging.
Keywords:demographic processes, life expectancy, potential, population mortality.
