The main trends in the development of banks

Vasiliev Igor Ivanovich  (Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation)

Throughout the long historical development, the content of banking activity remained unchanged. Reflecting the interests of its customers, the bank at all times accepted deposits, performed credit and settlement operations. The volume and set of these operations varied, but they still formed the basis of banking activities, in essence the bank remained a monetary institution, in the activities of which both individuals and enterprises were interested. All this, however, in no way means that there has been no change in the banks. On the contrary, despite a certain conservatism, there were noticeable changes in their activities. Today, the bank is, according to tradition, not only an enterprise that performs monetary and settlement operations in cash and non-cash way, but also provides services that are characteristic of other participants in the financial market. Features of the current stage of development of banking activities are not only in the expansion of its scale. The appearance of the bank is changing not because it began to perform operations peculiar to other subjects, but because the very model of its activities and its technologies are changing.
