Glagolica and cyrillic as foundations of national identity

Tashlykova Natalya Yuryevna  (Russian State University named after A.N. Kosygin (Technologies. Design. Art), Moscow)

The article raises the problem of attitude to the mission of Cyril and Methodius in the modern Russian educational field when covering the topic of the emergence of Slavic and Old Russian writing. It is shown that most school and university textbooks do not at all reflect information about life and the struggle for worship in the Slavic language of Equal-to-the-Apostles Brothers based on the available historical sources, and Cyril and Methodius are called the authors of the Cyrillic alphabet. A similar level of study of such a key topic for culture led to the fact that during the survey, the majority of Russian schoolchildren and students report that Cyril and Methodius went to Kyiv and created the Cyrillic alphabet. It is justified that the attitude to the alphabet is indeed the most important element in the structure of ethnic and national identity. That is why the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets are "recognized" or "not recognized" by the achievements of their peoples by false patriots of various ethnic communities. The article makes a proposal: to introduce into the educational field modern data on Slavic studies about the Glagolitic and the mission of Cyril and Methodius in the fight against the church hierarchs of Rome and Constantinople for the use of the Slavic language in worship, about the Cyrillic alphabet as a compromise alphabet created after the death of Cyril and Methodius by ancient Bulgarian scribes.

Keywords:culture, national identity, alphabet, Glagolitic, Cyrillic, Cyril and Methodius, Clement of Ohrid.
