The article attempts a comparative analysis of approaches and models of understanding the concept of "national interests" in Russian scientific thought in the post-Soviet period. Due to the increased need of the scientific and political communities to use the concept within the framework of national policy strategies and state-building programs being developed in Russia today, consensus on the issue of understanding the institution of national interest in Russia acquires the necessary relevance and the need to achieve.
Object: The object of the research is to attempt, on the basis of the available vision models and the key parameters and properties of the concept of "national interest" proposed by domestic theorists, to offer a more accurate characterization and definition from a meaningful point of view.
Methods: The research uses such methods as: analysis, synthesis, system method, historical method, comparative legal and formal legal method.
Results: The result of the research work is the proposed refined and complex characteristic of the concept of "national interest", determined on the basis of the identified specific features and properties of the socio-political and legal phenomenon under consideration.
Conclusions: The given opinions of the scientific community, including those expressed within the framework of the legal norms that were in force earlier and are currently available, characterize the concept of "national interest" in Russia as an ambiguous and heterogeneous socio-political and legal phenomenon, which is a consequence of no less ambiguous socio-political processes, views and needs of the state, citizens and society.
