Dmitrieva Yulia Viktorovna  (DSc of Economics, Associate Professor, Leading Researcher at the Laboratory of Population Reproduction Problems of the Institute of Socio-Economic Problems of Population of the Federal Research Sociological Center Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow )

The aim of the study is to assess the main factors of the potential to reduce preventable mortality of the population and increase life expectancy. The article highlighted the factors that determine the potential opportunity in modern society to influence population mortality. It is substantiated that the strategy of searching for potential opportunities to influence population mortality should be aimed not so much at adding more years to a person's life, but at adding quality of life, and that the increase in life expectancy should not be accompanied by disability. It has been determined that there are structural differences in life expectancy and mortality rates in Russia, but the trend is the same regionally. Not only life expectancy of the population is increasing, but also the number of years lived in good health, which is a major part of the increase in years in general.

Keywords:life expectancy, potential, population mortality, health, behaviour.
