The article proposes a methodological approach developed by the author to calculate a composite index allowing to compare the development status of the organic markets between countries. Calculations covered four criterial blocks (supply, demand, regulation, international trade), combining a total of 11 indicators. The final results for 50 countries ranking according to the development status of the domestic organic market are demonstrated. For 37 countries, the ranking is supplemented by an indicator for the international trade block. Explanations regarding the rating positions of various countries, including Russia are given. The grouping of countries by the composite index measurement characterizing the development status of the organic market has been implemented. This enables to sort countries by groups with very high, high, medium and low status of organic market development. The final part of the article analyzes the impact of external factors on the organic markets development, including government support, per capita gross national income, environmental policy, logistics infrastructure and innovative development.
