Despite the obviousness and scale of self-employment, it remains a little-demanded object of state regulation and social policy, which is largely due to its poor study. Available studies usually provide fragmented views, characterized mainly by the economic component, and there are very few localized studies that characterize the self-employed in individual regions. Most often, these are surveys of various job search platforms, and the range of topics covered in such surveys gives a too general idea of the self-employed group, limited to gender, age, specifics of activity, frequency of orders and income level. Therefore, the social portrait of the self-employed, whose geography is localized by the author within the city of Khabarovsk, contributes to the overall picture of the state of regional self-employment in Russia. The article presents the results of a three-year study that reflects the regional specifics of self-employment in the city of Khabarovsk. Based on the characteristics identified during the study, a social portrait of a self-employed Khabarovsk resident was formed. The interrelation of the reasons of objective and subjective character, prompting to make a decision to carry out individual labor activity is reflected. For example, the lack of means of subsistence. The survey showed the presence of the most unprotected sociodemographic groups in terms of labor rights, which are more prone to self-employment, such as women on maternity leave, and representatives of older age, preretirement and retirement age. The study demonstrated the ignorance of the population about the essence of self-employment and the impossibility of identifying its representatives from among other business entities. The empirical basis of the study was a survey of self-employed citizens conducted in the period from 2020 to 2023.
