There is a trend of demographic aging of the population, where the number and share of older ages in the population increases over a long period of years, and accordingly the share of children and youth decreases. In this regard, an increase in life expectancy is a natural fact; however, the number of years lived in good health also increases, which accounts for the majority of the increase in years overall. The aim of the study is to assess the processes of reducing mortality and life expectancy as the main components of demographic potential. The article substantiates that the determination of potential opportunities to influence mortality and life expectancy of the population should be aimed not so much at adding more years to a person's life, but at adding quality of life, and so that the increase in life expectancy is not accompanied by disability. It is determined that each region has a unique potential to reduce mortality and increase life expectancy. It is noted that regional potential is not a guaranteed outcome, but an opportunity that needs to be realised through focused efforts, investment and effective policies.
Keywords:demographic potential, components of demographic potential, health, behaviour, preventable mortality, life expectancy.
