The article provides a multi-aspect analysis of the process of digital transformation of the oil industry in the context of the economic transition to Industry 4.0. Digital technologies are the basis of the fourth industrial revolution, providing significant resource savings in production and improving working conditions for personnel. Factors contributing to the implementation of digital solutions by companies have been identified. These are: increasing complexity of geological exploration and oil production; growing requirements for environmental safety and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions during oil production; increased competition in the global oil market, which requires increasing the economic efficiency of production. The principles that determine the success of the digital transformation of oil companies have been identified: complete rejection of manual data collection and processing; centralized control of the entire technological process; comprehensive implementation of digital solutions. The following problems have been identified as the main barriers to digital transformation: the high cost of acquiring and implementing digital technologies; lack of highly qualified personnel capable of introducing digital solutions into the technological process; the need for complex integration of all the different software used in oil production; a large amount of data obtained during the production process and its security; difficulty in changing the organizational culture of the workforce of oil producing companies and the transition to the basic principles of digital culture. Overcoming these barriers will allow the Russian oil industry to take a leading position in the world not only in the export of oil and petroleum products, but in labor productivity in the industry and production efficiency, which will ultimately lead to strengthening the competitiveness of our country in the world market.
