CONCEPTUALIZING THE ROLE OF CULTURAL MEMORY IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

The article is devoted to cultural memory, on the one hand, as the most optimal concept denoting a socially determined form of supra-individual memory, and, on the other hand, as a theoretical construct denoted by this concept. Cultural memory is understood as a type of supra-individual memory that accumulates collective, value-significant memories, intentionally preserved and transmitted in mytho-symbolic forms. Recently, more and more attention in the humanitarian environment has been focused on the problem of cultural memory. Today, we can talk about an established theoretical and methodological direction in the study of the phenomenon of memory, the so-called memory studies. Cultural memory is a key mechanism through which society preserves and transmits its collective experience, values and identity from one generation to another.
