The article examines the phenomenon of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) as an innovative form of organization based on the use of blockchain technology and smart contracts. An overview of theoretical approaches to governance decentralization is presented, starting with the concepts of network and autonomous organizations proposed by 20th-century scientists and up to modern examples such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Particular attention is paid to the legal status of DAOs, the possibilities of their legal recognition, the choice of organizational and legal form, as well as the problems of taxation and regulation of such structures. The work analyzes the key areas of application of DAOs: in investments, financial transactions, insurance, digital services and public administration. The main risks associated with autonomy, the lack of centralized governance, as well as threats to security and protection of participants' rights are emphasized. A conclusion is made about the need to improve the legal framework and develop international standards for the effective functioning of DAOs in the global financial system.
