This article examines the historical evolution and effectiveness of economic sanctions as a foreign policy tool. Key periods of sanctions implementation are discussed, focusing on the transition from broad sanction policies to targeted financial measures. The research also highlights trends in realisation and impact of sanctions. The article finds that sanctions' success depends on multiple interconnected variables rather than isolated factors, while noting their limitations when used unilaterally.
