This article identifies patterns in the transformation of the principle of freedom of labor when employment contracts are amended in Russian law. It is demonstrated that freedom of labor in this area is dynamic and is implemented through a system of legal mechanisms reflecting the balance of interests of the employee, employer, and society. An analysis of Soviet and post-Soviet legislation establishes that initially, freedom of labor functioned as a derivative assumption within the model of the universal obligation to work and was consistently limited in the interests of a planned economy and industrial discipline. It is established that the modern model of freedom of labor is expressed not in the absolute stability of contractual terms, but in the employee's right to informed consent or refusal to continue working when they are changed. A conclusion is formulated regarding the compromise nature of freedom of labor and freedom of employment contract, which allow for normatively determined restrictions that do not eliminate, but rather transform the essence of the principle.
Keywords:freedom of labor, employment contract, employee consent, change of employment contract terms, principle of universality of labor, transfer to another job.
