An attempt is made to determine the prospective environmental damage caused by ecocide. The most critical situations and causes that contribute to the likelihood of ecocide are identified. The most general legal mechanisms for countering ecocide are proposed. Two diametrically opposed approaches to the causes of ecocide are contrasted: anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. According to the authors, ecocentrism may not solve all crisis situations or neutralize all threats to nature, but it can draw more attention to the interconnections and dependencies between humans and the forces of nature. Responsibility towards future generations is regarded as a socio-legal and humanistic factor in countering ecocide.
Keywords:Ecocide, harm, assessment, anthropocentrism, and ecocentrism.
