The mechanisms for the development of PE in CP are still not fully understood, but lately there has been increasing evidence of the role of the intestinal microbiota in the development of cognitive impairment. In this paper, we have tried to highlight the main work published on this issue today, but further research in this direction is very relevant, since a clear understanding of the pathogenesis of cognitive disorders in liver cirrhosis and the role of intestinal microbiota in these processes will allow us to develop new approaches in the treatment of these patients that will undoubtedly improve their quality of life.
