Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is one of the most important fishing species. Food producers often falsely indicate the presence of Atlantic cod in processed fish products, while in fact replacing it with the cheaper fish species. One of the effective ways to address this problem may be genetic identification of Atlantic cod in fish products. The authors suggest a technique for Atlantic cod identification on the basis of the mitochondrial COI gene using real-time PCR. The system accurately identifies the Atlantic cod DNA fragment both in fresh fish samples and in samples subjected to heat treatment, and therefore may be used in control studies in specialized laboratories to confirm the food product composition.
