The purpose of this review is to discuss the role of postoperative hypothyroidism as a predictor of surgical complications in the elderly. Postoperative hypothyroidism with manifestations of the aging process can be associated with many symptoms that may be present in patients, such as cognitive disorders, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and hematological changes, and ultimately, which is a severe and life-threatening condition in the elderly. Adequate levels of thyroid hormones are necessary to achieve optimal results from any type of surgical intervention. However, so far only a few randomized clinical studies have shown a link between postoperative hypothyroidism and adverse surgical outcomes. Therefore, it is of great interest to determine the effect of postoperative hypothyroidism on the incidence of various complications in elderly patients.
Keywords:hypothyroidism, old age, surgery, thyrotoxicosis, hormones.
