In diabetes mellitus, there is a presence of mitochondrial dysfunction, a decrease in ATP levels and suppression of the autophagy process. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors increase the number of mitochondria in cells and restore their integrity. When using these drugs, there is an improvement in the functional activity of mitochondria. Inhibitors of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 stimulate autophagy processes in cells. As a result, the supply of energy to cells improves and oxidative stress decreases.
