Microbiology of endodontic infections

Intracanal infection is the leading etiological factor of apical periodontitis. The main condition for effective disinfection is a thorough understanding of the characteristics of the microflora of root canals. This article presents an overview of modern scientific views on the microbiology of pulp infection and methods of its identification. The significance of the theory of "focal infection" and indications for systemic administration of antibiotics are discussed.
