Despite the widespread occurrence in colorectal surgery of surgical interventions ending in the formation of an anastomosis, its failure remains a serious problem, accompanied by a high rate of complications and deaths. The development of this formidable complication is associated both with the technical conditions for the formation of the anastomosis, and with the individual characteristics of the organism. In order to reduce the incidence of colorectal anastomotic leaks, many surgical approaches and prevention methods have been proposed over the past years and decades, but to date, none of them has significantly improved the results of treatment.
