Atherosclerosis is one of the most common diseases in developed countries. It is characterized by a typical pattern of structural changes in the artery wall, detected by morphological, ultrasound and radiopaque methods. The results of recent studies indicate that the inflammatory process present at the site of atherosclerotic plaque development also has systemic manifestations. Inflammation is a key pathogenetic mechanism that mediates the transformation of risk factors into morphological changes and clinical symptoms. This review is devoted to studies that study the participation of matrix metalloproteinase -9 and chemotactic protein-1 in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Keywords:atherosclerosis, pathogenesis, inflammation, matrix metalloproteinases, chemokines
