The article discusses modern concepts for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity using bacteriophages. It has been noted that bacteriophages are more virulent to bacteria in human cells than to bacteria in bacterial cultures. While antibiotics have been determined to be the standard first-line therapy against bacterial infections, the use of bacteriophages generally has three main indications: to combat infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria; to combat infections resistant to antibiotics, despite the sensitivity of the bacterial culture; exposure to bacteria when antibiotics are not indicated, and due to preventative measures for overexposure to antibiotics in humans and the environment during food production. It has been revealed that bacteriophages are promising viruses that selectively infect bacteria and have prerequisites for use in medicine and dentistry, in particular. It is concluded that the prophylactic administration of bacteriophages is of particular relevance in cases where there are no clinical signs of bacterial infection, and the use of antibiotics is undesirable due to their side effects. The protective effect of bacteriophages helps the body cope with the infectious process without disturbing the balance of microflora in the body.
