Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and its prevalence increases with age due to decreased elasticity of the heart walls, myocardial remodeling, fibrosis, and gene mutations. The development of AF in old age can also be caused by concomitant pathology: arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease, chronic heart failure, and other diseases. The presence of geriatric syndromes aggravates the course of arrhythmia; AF in old age has its own course features and requires the development of new approaches to managing this group of patients.
