Any injury or inflammation in the abdominal cavity causes an inflammatory response of the peritoneum, but the understanding and treatment of peritonitis has improved greatly due to advances in anatomy, microbiology and surgery. Yet, there is still much that is unclear: how best to operate, what role anaerobic bacteria play, and how the body's immune response can be managed. New research in these areas could revolutionize the treatment of peritonitis and reduce peritonitis-related mortality. The aim of this study is therefore to trace the evolution of the understanding and treatment of peritonitis from ancient to modern times.
