The physiological significance of melatonin in the body and its homeostatic role in the skin

In this review, we consider current views on the role of melatonin in the body and the pathogenesis of various human diseases. As recent studies show, melatonin is an important link in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including skin diseases. Melatonin stimulates the differentiation of human epidermal cells, stimulates the synthesis of cutaneous collagen, is involved in the regulation of the cycle of hair development, skin pigmentation, affects the speed and quality of wound healing. Thus, melatonin plays a leading role in creating a skin barrier. Studies in recent years show the association of melatonin and skin diseases such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, the formation of keloid scars.
