A system of independent certification under FSC scheme: the implementation experience in the timber industry in Irkutsk region

this study examines the experience of implementing Forest stewardship Council (FSC) certification in Russia and the Irkutsk region, in particular. To this end, the process of implementation of the FSC standard in the activities of companies in the timber industry was studied and its main requirements were reflected. Particular attention is paid to the extent to which certification helps companies meet one of the FSC's key requirements for the conservation of valuable forests. It has been found that FSC certification can greatly assist companies in establishing a timber supply chain to identify illegally harvested timber. Forest certification under the FSC (Forest stewardship Council) scheme can be characterized today as a phenomenon that has steadily entered the Russian forest industry. There are many reasons why many timber producers have already received FSC certificates. But even more motivation for those who now face a choice-to be certified or not. This article assesses the current situation in the field of FSC certification, as well as identifies the main prospects for its development.
