The article deals with the image of Judas Iscariot in the Gospel and in the Gnostic "Gospel of Judas" from the Codex Tchacos. The author analyzes Christian and Gnostic texts, comparing features of the Christian and Gnostic Judas. The Christian tradition considers Judas as a traitor and enemy of Christ, in the "Gospel of Judas" Judas Iscariot is presented as a hero who helped Jesus to escape from this evil world and go to the heaven. Two images of Judas Iscariot are so different that the author makes the conclusion that they have fundamentally different semantics. In addition, the author shows that claims by some researchers about the similarities of the Christian Gospels and the "Gospel of Judas" from the Codex Tchacos seemed unreasonable. In conclusion, the author argues that the motive for the betrayal of Judas Iscariot was the internal conflict of the Apostle, faced with a choice: to follow Christ or to return to the usual life of the ordinary citizen of Judea. At the same time, the "Gospel of Judas" from the Codex Tchacos posits the heroic image of Judas, close to Christ, like Christ, the chosen man.
Keywords:Christ, Judas, Gnosticism, Codex Tchacos, betrayal, chosen man, apocryphal story.
