Socratus portrayal in Stepan Erzia`s art (interpretation of the cultural-historical past in «modern style» and symbolism)

The article considers Socratus portrayal features at sculptor S.D. Erzia, whose artistic and aesthetic system had developed under the strong influ-ence of “modern style” and symbolism. It is shown, that, unlike the artists belonging to the realistic trend (psychological or typological portrait) Er-zia represents the geniuses of the past, “eternal companions”, in a new kind of portrait – «ontological», «conceptual». At M.M. Antokolsky Socratus merges with his historical reputation, at Erzia he expresses wide collective concepts; individual comes to the rank of general, thus receiving not abstract, objective, but deeply experienced subjective understanding.
