The role and functions of realistic painting in the history of Russian fine arts

The article analyzes the role and functions of realistic painting in the history of art. It is specified that the social changes of 1860 - 1870 years, awakened the interest of realistic artists to the people's life. Therefore, "Peredvizhniki" pass to genre painting, national themes, which led to the flourishing of the historical genre with military scenes. A careful study of nature was regarded as the source of objective truth.
