Article deals with publications in the Russian "The Art of Cinema" magazine in the second half of the 80s of the 20th century. It describes the process of releasing the national film criticism from the Soviet ideological approach to the evaluation of the cinematography of capitalist countries. The author identifies the most reactionary, in the opinion of Soviet propaganda, components of “bourgeois cinema”. He traces the significant changes in the way of evaluation those components by authors of "The Art of Cinema" magazine. The editorial board claimed that the scenes of violence and sexuality, mystical motifs, can be used as artistic methods or as a reflection of reality, and not only be exploited for the commerce or ideological manipulation purposes. An alternative view of the history and patterns of social development, embodied in the works of cinematography, does not necessarily serve as an indicator of hostility.
Keywords:film criticism, bourgeois cinematography, "The Art of Cinema", "perestroika" press.
