The article is devoted to the philosophical understanding of knowledge and the system of education. The author traces the origin and evolution of world outlooks on education as a specific area of human activity, the essence of which is not only a simple transfer of knowledge, but also the formation of the person himself. It emphasizes the history of the emergence of human capital and its definition. The author concludes that the economic and intellectual prosperity of any state depends on human capital, which in the 21-st century is one of the key moments of the development of modern society.
