Estates' trading traditions of the High Middle Ages

The article is concerned with place and role of merchantry in the medieval soci-ety. The author analyzes the phenomenon of the commune towns’ formation and the merchant estate’s nascency, that staged a coup in the feudal system during the Medieval Europe. A special attention in the article focuses on the concepts of Jacques Le Goff, reflected in his works "Time, Work, and Culture in the Middle Ages" and "Money and the middle ages: an essay in historical an-thropology". The author reviews the problem of relationships between mer-chants and the Catholic Church, concerns the economic development of the Mediterranean world, bookkeeping and banking. In general, the present re-search considers the formation of proto-capitalist economic and employment relations in Italy of the XII -XIII centuries.
