The problem of national-cultural identity in Latvian schedule of the end of XIX – beginning of the XX century

The article attempts to analyze the process of the formation of national-cultural identity in the easel graphic arts of Latvia in the late XIX - early XX centuries. with a description of the specific contribution of each of the artists. There are two approaches to the development of national ornament, on the one hand, the precise, rigid and dogmatic line of artisan ornamentalism by Richard Zarins and stylized motifs of flora and fauna, as well as ornaments in which the composition contains a clear geometrization of Julius Madernieks.
