The author explores the identity of the "fighter against totalitarianism" in the social practice of Vladimir Bukovsky, which is typical in the self-identification of Soviet dissidents in the second half of the 1960s and 1970s. The article shows the origins of this identity, orientation to the texts and behavioral patterns of the People's will, the transformation of the original model in the Soviet realities. The texts of Bukovsky «A Handbook on Psychiatry for Dissenters» and an autobiography «And the wind returns» (English version of the name is «To build a castle: my life as a dissenter») are the materials of the author’s research.
The literary and journalistic activity of Bukovsky, as well as the other dissidents, was assessed as an invariant of oppositional public actions. The identity of the “fighter against totalitarianism” is comprehended as collective in the social practice of dissidents.
