The article analyzes the approaches of Russian and foreign scientists in the field of psychology, linguistics, and psycholinguistics to the definition of the essence and structure of communication. The authors reveal the issues of ontogenetic formation of communication. The main indicators of the formation of the child’s communicative competence as a basic characteristic of the personality are presented.
