The article examines the phenomenon of food addiction: the definition, types, causes of occurrence and individual personality traits that contribute to the formation of dependence on food and are characteristic of food addicts are presented. Some researchers equate food addiction with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Food addiction is viewed as a behavior characterized by food intake in which food (when overeating) or not eating (when fasting) performs a reinforcing positive function. The article describes such individual characteristics of the personality of food addicts as: level of anxiety, impulsivity, locus of control, temperament, accentuation, personality type, peculiarities of interpersonal contacts, level of self-esteem, prevailing defense mechanisms, peculiarities of responding to stressful situations, level of awareness, specificity of the emotional sphere. etc.
