The article analyzes the evolution of the concertmaster's art from its inception to the present. Ritual songs and dances in ancient times were accompanied by beats that rhythmically structured the first performances. Gradually, the participation of the accompaniment became more complex and the participation of the concertmaster in this process became necessary. The definition of the concertmaster's activity, which throughout its formation had great demand, is given. The role of an accompanist in the performing process requires a high level of proficiency in playing a musical instrument, the ability to accompany a solo performance of a vocalist, a musician-performer, an instrumental ensemble, a singing group. Over time, concertmasters began not only to accompany the performance of musicians, but also to lead the performing process. At present, concertmaster skills have not lost their significance in all spheres of musical activity.
