In this paper, the authors consider the fundamental foundations of smart cities. Taking into account the pragmatic orientations of modern philosophy, the expediency of understanding smart urban spaces in terms of ontological, epistemological and anthropological aspects is substantiated. The works of classics and modern authors relevant to the problem are analyzed. The necessary explanations and clarifications to the considered concepts are given. The basic ideological foundations of smart cities are represented and options for their practical implementation are demonstrated. Multiple concepts are considered, the transition to which allows not only to satisfy the growing needs of the population, but also to promote the self-realization of individuals. The directions of the application of intellectual constructs to the transformations of urban spaces are presented. Separately, critical lines are shown, whose representatives reasonably believe that smart city projects are utopias. In conclusion, the authors summarize the results of the study.
