Coping strategies as a factor of burnout syndrome in medical workers of palliative center

Our study presents the results of the diagnosis of emotional burnout and the choice of coping strategies among palliative care center employees. The study was conducted on the basis of the Municipal Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Chelyabinsk City Clinical Hospital No. 5 of the Department of Palliative Care for Adults. A theoretical analysis of the scientific literature of foreign and domestic scientists on the problem of emotional burnout and coping behavior of medical workers is presented. During the empirical study, the following methods were applied: questionnaire "Professional (emotional) burnout" Method of K. Maslach and S. Jackson; diagnostics of dominant coping strategies of the personality D. Amirkhan (adapted for research in Russian by N.A. Sirota and V.M. Yaltonsky (1995). The following results were obtained: palliative care staff, being in the "reduction of professionalism" phase, more often use the coping strategy "avoiding problems"; in the "stress" phase, they more often resort to the coping strategy "problem solving"; in the "emotional exhaustion" phase, they turn to the coping strategies "distancing", "search for social in the phase of "depersonalization and cynicism", employees resort to "confrontational coping" and to "seeking social support".
